BMW Cooling System in Houston

Since the model year 2004 (and Z4 MY 2003), the BMW cooling system has been using an engine coolant with a long-term life rating. The long-term antifreeze/coolant must be completely drained and replaced only in conjunction with any Repairs that require the replacement of aluminum or metal BMW cooling system components. The corrosion protection for these components is provided only in the new long-term coolant. On all other repairs that involve draining of partial quantities of coolant, replace the drained quantities with new long-term antifreeze/coolant.

According to the manufacturer, filling your BMW with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water will help protect your BWM from freezing temperatures as low as -34°F (-37°C). It is recommended to alter this ratio from 50/50 to 60/40 in climates with more severe weather. That is 60% antifreeze to 40% water. This will allow for protection down to -62°F (-52°C). It is important to remember that you should never exceed 60% antifreeze and should never go below 50%. Doing so will cause the freezing of components of the vehicle which compromises their structural integrity. It is important to note that increasing the amount of antifreeze will not help, but hinder its ability to protect your vehicle from the cold. Always premix your antifreeze and water mixture before introducing it to your vehicle’s system. If pre-mixing is not performed, damage will occur to the water pump assembly.
