Tie rods are small, tubular rods that are attached to your suspensions steering parts. They are small and can handle tensile loads only, but perform a few important task. Tie rods keep your turning radius at a safe amount, preventing the wheels from continuing to turn past the point where they could become perpendicular to the road, placing an enormous amount of stress on other parts. They attach from the steering box center to the link or rack. Tie rods do wear out over time, and will begin to allow a good amount of “play” in the steering system. This could result in shaking of the steering wheel or a vague feeling on center.
