Your vehicle’s differential performs a very essential and necessary task every single time you drive, yet few actually are aware as to what it does. If not for the differential, the two drive wheels on your vehicle would have to be locked together, which would impede turning since both wheels spin at different speeds while turning. The differential splits the torque coming from the transmission two separate ways, allowing each wheel to receive power independently and to still be able to spin at different speeds.  Without the differential, you would constantly find your cars outside wheel dragging in turns, causing excessive wear on the drivetrain and tires. There are center differentials for vehicles that feature a 4-wheel drive system, allowing all wheels to move independently from each other as well.
